Accrington Stanley ended their season on a high note by lifting the Lancashire FA Marsden Challenge Trophy on Tuesday night.

A damp April evening was soon warmed up with an early own goal by the visitors before former Burnley player Paul Cook bagged a brace before half time. The Reds midfielder had the chance to bag a hat-trick in the second period but his spotkick was well saved by the Burscough keeper.

Five Stanley players were released earlier on in the day, one of these being Steve Flitcroft, and he struck a great volley following a cross from the left hand side to score the Reds fourth.

The game was more like a pre-season match, with Stanley already three-nil up after the first leg.

All that was left was for the loyal army of 407 Stanley supporters to watch captain for the night, Jonathon Smith lift the trophy. The Darwen based centre half said his goodbyes to the crowd after a six year stint at the club.

Manager John Coleman must now add to the squad this summer in the hope of improving on a 10th place finish for the last two years in the Conference.

Chairman Eric Whalley should also invest in a new refreshment hut for the stadium, two pounds for a hot-dog, no pies on sale and chips that tasted like they were still frozen.
