Gulls midfielder Lee Mansell fired the home side into a 50th-minute lead, but Stanley restored parity 19 minutes later when substitute Chris Turner's superb angled ball set up Michael Symes to score from six yards.
However, Accrington defender Darran Kempson scored a stoppage-time own goal to hand relegation-threatened Torquay their first win of 2010.
Coleman said: "It's the manner of the defeat that annoys you more than anything because I don't think we deserved anything out of the game. We were poor, I honestly thought it was going to peter out into a draw.
"I think that's the sixth time we have conceded in injury time and it's too many. We can't keep doing it. It's getting to the point now where I am getting to dread those last four minutes. It's as if when the board goes up it gives everyone from the opposition a lift because they know that Accrington concede late on.
"To be honest I thought Torquay were the better team. We had a 20-minute spell when we were on top when we brought the sub (Chris Turner) on and I thought he caused them problems and we scored a great goal."
