Magpies too strong for Stanley

But it could all have been different for fellow play-off hopefuls Stanley after they had a goal disallowed in the 11th minute when Darran Kempson was adjudged to have handled.

The Magpies, however, took their chance after 28 minutes when striker Hughes was fouled by Phil Edwards in the area and Hall pointed to the spot. Keeper Ian Dunbavin saved Hughes' penalty with his legs but it bounced out for Davies to guide home his ninth of the season.

County took charge and they doubled their lead after 48 minutes following a mistake by Stanley defender Edwards. He cleared the ball across the edge of the box straight to the waiting Hughes, who smashed home his 24th goal of the season.

And Rodgers made it three on 54 minutes when, after a quick breakaway, he got the ball 20 yards out and found the bottom corner of the net.
