Manager Sammy McIlroy told Morecambe's official website: "I have been looking at signing Paul since pre-season and I'm delighted that the deal has finally been achieved.

"He is a player who has always impressed me and I'm sure he will be a tremendous addition to the squad."

The 35-year-old striker, who made over 400 appearances for Stanley and is their all-time record goalscorer, revealed McIlroy offered him the new challenge he had been looking for.

"It is sad to leave Stanley after all these years because I have had a great time there," he said.

"But I am now at that stage of my career where I need a new challenge and it is a good time to move on."

Fraser McLachlan is a long-term absentee after he twisted his knee in the opening-day draw against Hereford but fellow midfielder Mark Duffy is available after suspension.
