It is not long since the fans at Valle Parade were watching Premiership Football but in 2001 they were relegated after picking up only five wins, only one of which came away from home and following thrashings by Leeds United (1-6), Manchseter United (0-6) and others they were confined to First Division football.
They started brightly in Division One and a first day 4-0 win over Barnsley started a good run of results but that all came to end soon after and they eventually finished in 15th place, way below their pre-season expectations.
It all went from bad to worse and over the seasons they gradually slipped down the table and last season was disastrous for them, as they once again were relegated but to add to the pain, they were a matter of hours away from going bancrupt.
Their worst results came against Burnley and Sunderland, who both beat them 4-0 but they did manage good results again Reading (2-1) and Crystal Palace (1-0) but it wasn't enough as they finished 23rd with only crisis club Wimbledon, now known as MK Dons, below them.
They still have some quality players in their squad like Dele Adebola, David Wetherall and Dean Windass and if they can find their form they will be in the running for promtion come the end of the season.
They havent started this season as they would have like to and despit a 4-1 win over Bristol City they currently find themselves 12th in League One.
Stanley have certainly got their work cut-out tonight but as we displayed last season, we certainly up our game against Football League opposition and we can have hope of a win.
COME ON STANLEY
