17 Minutes into the match and Accrington Stanley were awarded a free kick wide on the right just by the corner flag. With all the Leigh players expecting a high cross into the area Lee McEvilly was left open on the edge and when Ged Brannan played the ball just infront of him, his first time shot went flying into the bottom left hand corner to give the Reds the lead, which was not deserved as the visitors had starved Stanley of the ball in the opening stages.
Paul Mullin, Ian Craney and Rory Prendergast all went close but it was Lee McEvilly, nicknamed Evil by the fans, who made it two after the break. Rory Prendergast's corner was swung in wonderfully from the right hand side and up popped Evil to nod the ball through an astonished visiting 'keeper's hands.
Leigh's Gareth Stoker beat Jon Kennedy just to see his shot hit the woodwork from long range before Michael Byrne lashed home a consolation goal nearly three minutes into stoppage time.
