Paul Howarth held his nerve to score the winning penalty as Accrington Stanley won themselves a third round FA Cup tie at home to Colchester United next month.

Second Division Bournemouth could only watch in agony as Karl Broadhurst blasted the Cherries fourth penalty over and Howarth made sure with Stanley's fifth.

It was a victory that Accrington deserved after holding the Cherries for most of the game.

In fairness, Bournemouth did have the better chances, but were guilty of some appalling finishing with Warren Feeney and Steve Fletcher the main culprits.

Stanley came into their own in the last ten minutes of the game and Bournemouth keeper Neil Moss had to pull off two stunning saves to keep out Andy Procter.

As the game went into extra time both sides were cautious, but Steve Flitcroft had the best chance for Stanley which Moss was once again equal to.

Stanley boss John Coleman threw on substitute goalkeeper Jon Kennedy in the 120th minute much to the shock of many of the Stanley fans. Both he and Gordon Armstrong came on in readiness for the penalty shootout.

The first seven penalties were all perfect until Broadhurst missed, hitting his kick over the top and the Conference side are now in the third round for the first time since the old Accrington Stanley did so just a year before they withdrew from the Football League.
