Daryl Clare wrapped up three invaluable points to keep Chester City at the top of the Nationwide Conference and on course to regain their place in the Football League.

Clare, who scored in the mid-week win at Telford, was on the spot with a last minute penalty to double the visitors' advantage.

And Accrington's Robbie Williams proved himself to be no angel by being shown the red card for his tackle, having also been booked earlier in the match for ungentlemanly conduct.

While Chester sit proudly on top, Stanley's hopes of making the play-offs suffered another setback before a bumper 2,561 crowd at the Interlink Stadium - one of the best this season.

Accrington have five more games to clinch a play-off spot and current third division leaders Doncaster Rovers have shown this term what can be achieved by a side gaining promotion from the Conference through the play-offs.

However, Chester look set to go up automatically providing they can keep their run going.

They went ahead in the 13th minute following some early pressure. Scott Guyett was their hero heading in moments after a Jamie Heard corner.

Veteran Paul Cook tried to get Accrington moving but the Lancastrians found it hard work breaking down the Chester back line.

Steve Hollis fired in a shot after 32 minutes that went wide before being replaced by Dean Calcutt.

Williams' shot in the 50th minute without troubling the keeper while another effort by Lutel James was also blocked.

Both teams were cancelling each other out and Chester appeared to have settled for a 1-0 win.

However, in the last couple of minutes, Williams brought down Clare, was sent off for a professional foul and Clare fired past Jon Kennedy to complete the 2-0 win.
