Accrington Stanley celebrated a vital three points in a heated game with fellow promotion chasers Aldershot.

Both sides were reduced to ten men. Reds lost Peter Cavanagh on 30 minutes for handball on the line and Tony Shields was sent off for a second bookable offence on 55 minutes for Shots.

A pitch battle ensued following Shields dismissal with even a scuffle in the dug out which both mangers dismissed as nothing.

Aldershot boss Terry Brown said: "It was just a ruck between two managers. I was frustrated by the way we were playing. These things happen in football and it wasn't a problem, we have had a chat since." Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman said: "It was something that happens, managers get frustrated and tense. I will be buying him a drink after the game. There is no hard feelings." Stanley got off to a dream start when Paul Mullin sent Andy Proctor's cross into the back of the net on two minutes.

On five minutes, Rory Prendergast was the provider and Mullin again fired home for his 16th goal of the season.

Roscoe D'Sane got one back for Aldershot in seven minutes chipping Stanley goalkeeper Jamie Speare.

Cavanagh was adjudged to have handled D'Sane's goalbound effort on 33 minutes and D'Sane fired home the penalty.

"I thought it was harsh," said Coleman. "It was a fierce shot from six yards out and Cav was turning his body. It wasn't intentional." Andy Gouck however, put ten-men Stanley back ahead, getting on the end of Prendergast cross on 44 minutes.

Inthe second half Shields saw red on 60 minutes and Stanley increased their advantage when Paul Howarth rattled home a free-kick from 20 yards out.

"It was our poorest performance for the season," said Brown. "We never got going and our defending was laughable." Stanley keeper James Speare did have to be at his best at the end though to pull off three good saves.

"Those were world class," added Coleman. "It wasn't all one way and there was some good football on show."
