Resurgent Rochdale, who have suffered just one defeat in 11 games, brushed aside their overly physical neighbours Accrington Stanley 4-2 at Spotland to further distance themselves from the relegation dog fight.

The home side inflicted the bulk of the damage in the early stages and opened the scoring after just 14 minutes when flying winger Ben Muirhead provided fellow wide man Adam Rundle with a close range finish.

Muirhead was again the provider on 24 minutes as his free kick was headed home unchallenged by Glenn Murray.

Murray added a second on 31 minutes when the home side broke at pace through David Perkins and, from an Adam Le Fondre cross, Murray had the simplest of finishes.

Murray should have registered a hat trick when after a foul by Michael Welch the home side were awarded a spot kick but Murray's effort was kept out by on loan keeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak.

Stanley boss John Coleman made two changes at the break but with little effect as the home side continued to press and only an excellent save by Kazimierczak kept out a Rory McArdle header before Le Fondre had an effort chalked off for offside.

The visitors were given brief hope on 70 minutes when Paul Mullin headed home a Shaun Whalley corner but even that was extinguished when, following a foul on man of the match Murray, Le Fondre rolled home the subsequent spot-kick.

Stanley substitute Andy Mangan scored with the game's last kick deep into time added on to give the score line a touch of respectability that his side's performance didn't deserve.
