The opening 5 minutes of the game saw Ian Craney put a long range shot wide of the goalkeeper's right hand post and another shot from outside of the area was put wide after Proctor mishit his volley after Mike Flynn's long throw into the area was headed out by a defender.
Ian Craney was again involved as he ran from the half way line all the was to the edge of the penalty area, beating several Carlisle United players on the way before he was fouled a few yards out of the area but the resulting free kick was taken quickly and lacked accuracy as it went flying over the bar.
Carlisle were not starting the game as their high league position would suggest they should but they could and maybe even should have taken the lead when position was given away on the left by Stanley and the Carlisle striker somehow managed to stab the ball wide from close range after a good cross in to the area.
The visitors had another good chance soon after when a good run from midfield ended with Danny Alcock making a great one handed save to his left. Alcock was again to the rescue as he made a great double save, the first coming from a very powerful shot from outside the penalty area.
Rory Prendergast was bringing some well needed width to the Accrington Stanley midfield in his first start after his operation and he had a good run before feeding Lee McEvilly whose shot was saved.
Prendergast got the first goal of the game, though, and what a stormer it was too. His cross come shot was too high for the goalkeeper to reach as he came rushing out of his goal and it dipped just in time to send the home fans, and players, wild.
The best chance of the game came when Lee McEvilly used his strength to get the ball and himself past the onrushing goalkeeper but he had hit the ball too far in front of himself and the ball was eventually cleared by the defence.
The half time break saw Carlisle bring on ex-Bury striker Andy Preece and he made an immediate impact, hitting the ball past Danny Alcock to make it one-one.
Former Blackpool defender Mike Flynn was forced off with injury and was replaced by Jon Smith and he was involved in a goalmouth scramble soon after but the ball was eventually cleared but Carlisle took the lead minutes later and again it was Andy Preece who was given too much time and space in the box to get his shot in which Alcock could do little to prevent hitting the back of the net.
Carlisle were controlling the second half just as Accrington had done the first and Paul Mullin missed a sitter from a yard out and a few minutes mater Jon Smith's header looked to have crossed the line but the referee said that it hadn't and to add insult to injury claims that the ball was cleared off the line by a defender's hand were turned away too.
