STANLEY LEAVE IT LATE

Last updated : 07 March 2005 By Kev Robinson
Stanley have been very unpredictable this season but looked to be turning the corner having gone on an unbeaten run of eight games prior to the home fixture against Forest Green Rovers- surely a walk over?

Stanley had been given two morale boosters in the week leading up the the game, with John Coleman adn Lee McEvilly winning the Manager-Of-The-Month and Player-Of-The-Month respectivly Stanley were hopeful of nothing less than a win.

FGR take the lead
The fans were not treated to the first half display thet they expected and the players did not seem up for the game. On-loan Burnley midfielder Mathew O'Neill was finally eligible to make his debut for Stanley playing on the right wing and it was he that had the first shot on goal, although his weak shot was never going to open the scoring.

The visiting goalkeeper was forced into a good save as the in-form Steve Jagielka hit a powerful shot which William's hit out for a corner. Lee McEvilly showed why he had won the Conference Player-Of-The-Month award when he took on three FGR defenders before shooting just wide of the goal.

The half-time whistle was blown by Barnsley referee M Short and the two teams went in level at 0-0.

Stanley beat the visiting goalkeeper early in the second half, with Lee McEvilly's shot coming back off the post but the Reds went one better on 66 minutes when Peter Cavanagh beat the goalkeeper Williams with a quick free-kick to finally put the home side one up.

The visitors found an unexpected equaliser after Crichton parried a shot straight into the path of FGR striker Beesley who had the simple task of tapping the ball home from close range. The woodwork was hit again soon after but this time it was the relegation battlers who saw a shot cleared off the crossbar, with Peter Cavanagh clearing up the danger.
Mullin rescues Stanley late on

On 73 minutes Forest Green took the lead after a long ball up the field found Beesley who scored with a chip over the onrushing home goalkeeper, Paul Crichton.

It all looked as though Stanley's unbeaten run was coming to an end but on 86 minutes Mullin rescued a point as he poked the ball inot the back of the net from close range.

It was not the performance or result that Stanley fans would have wanted but its a point all the same but it took a late goal to secure a point and the Stanley fans have every reason to be disappointed.
